What have we been up to?

Friendly matches

On September 20th, our men’s team had the opportunity to scrimmage The Deaf National team.  This team was having a weekend long tryouts led by coach Craig Rot, with the tryouts ending in the scrimmage against our DC Diplomats.  After a very physical game, the DC Diplomats edged out the Deaf National team 33-28.

Two weekends later, the Air Force Academy flew to the DC area to scrimmage our Men’s team and the DC Silencers.  Visiting from Colorado, the Air IMG_4058Force Academy team brought a young, strong team defeating the DC Diplomats in the close 16-15 game.  From there, Air Force also defeated the local DC Silencers team 26-20.  The DC Silencers brought a very light roster and ended up still playing a fast paced match against DC Diplomats. The DC Diplomats ended up with a 22-21 win against the DC Silencers.  All games were extremely close and we look forward to future scrimmages with these teams in the future.

While the men’s team was in Chapel Hill at the Tar Heels tournament, the women’s team hosted UNC for a friendly game. The young UNC team showed a lot of strength and team work, but at the end the DCD women won the match. The DCD team worked on perfecting the chemistry between the new and returning players, while trying different strategies and plays. We enjoyed having the enthusiastic UNC women’s team in DC and we look forward to scrimmaging them again soon.

UNC Tar Heels Invitational

The Men’s team participated in the Tar Heel Invitational on the UNC campus in Chapel Hill, NC.  After IMG_4056winning this tournament last year, DC was looking to defend their title.  Starting October 10th, the DC team played and won 3 pool play matches.  Two games against Clemson (16-13 and 17-9) and one against Carolina Blue “B” (16-14).

Day two of the matches, DC started the day with a semi-final match against Carolina Blue “A” team.  With a close match and some tough calls from the refereeing team, DC lost their first match 15-17 and then continued into the final match of the day for third place.  With a light roster and many bumps and bruises, our team played the extremely fast Carolina team.  DC then secured the third place trophy with a win over Carolina (21-18).

Although DC did not defend their title, the winners of this tournament were the United team from Auburn.  This team took 1st place after a huge upset last year in their quarter final game.  Congrats United and we will see you next year at this tournament!
